MuseumFutures Africa (MFA) as a pan-African, people-centred cultural project working with museums across the continent to test, explore and study potentials for new formats of African museology. Spearheaded by the Goethe-Institut and a team of African practitioners from the art and museum fields, the project was conceived in the culmination of a series of ‘Museum Conversations’ in 2019, as a means of mobilizing museum driven processes of innovation, transformation and adaptation across the African continent.

In its first iteration (2020-2022), the project aimed to find ways in which African museums ‘needs,’ can be turned into productive forms of reconstituting the value and relevance of African museums, both to their immediate and broader constituencies. It engaged six museums on the continent, from West, East and Southern Africa, in a year-long program. In its second iteration (2022-2023), Museum Futures has engaged with museums on the African continent, Brazil and India.

We retain a steering committee of staff from Goethe Institutes across the African continent, as well as cultural professionals in Africa. Hence, we maintain a strong African orientation and see this project as an opportunity to extend this practical conversation about museums and change to colleagues across the Global South.

The MFA project is centred on the formation of localised study groups as the key agents of institutional change. The study groups consist of individuals from within a particular museum (who occupy diverse roles in the museum from director to security staff), who are joined by external stakeholders (community members, artists, teachers etc). The study group serves as a locus of collective experimentation - and is a space for challenge, care, support, peer learning and exploration.
The study group meets on a regular basis over time and supports the museums in articulating and undertaking conceptual and practical experimentation in their institution. As a result of their collective work, the study group comes to define their own blueprint for institutional change that they can map out into the future planning of their museum.

Participating museums 2023 Museu Mafalala (Mozambique), Arna Jharna Thar Desert Museum (India), Conflictorium Museum of Conflict (India), Mutare Museum (Zimbabwe), Maji Maji Museum (Tanzania), Acervo da Laje (Brazil)

In 2023, we launched a cross-continental version of MuseumFutures, in which we extended the rhizomal format that we tried and tested through 2020-2022 and engaged six museums from around the world. We are motivated by the conviction that there are strong impulses in the museum worlds of Africa, Brazil and India to rethink museology to be more responsive to local constituents, to acknowledge and move beyond difficult imperial legacies and navigate the complex political present.
There are also entanglements between Africa and Brazil, Africa and India constituted by generations of cultural exchange and encounters resulting from migration, slave trades, globalisations, which remain side-lined by dominant global narratives.
Museums based in the Global South have much to learn from each-others’ strategies, realities and entangled histories but do not often find themselves in positions of engagement. Instead, global funding often works in ways that strengthen cultural relationships between North/ South. This project offers an exception to that norm.

The project has produced different versions (in English, French and Portuguese) of a curriculum intended to guide any museum or museum project interested in fostering institutional change. The curriculum provides instruction for (internal) facilitation of group sessions, suggested readings and resources and a series of sequential exercises that work towards a group experiment. The project has developed resources with collaborative partners that could guide workshops on the theme of: 1) alternative modalities, 2) digitisation in museums 3) networks and partnerships and 4) new approaches to documentation within museum practice 5) decolonial practice in museums 6) repatriation, restitution, return and reparation in museums.

It also has produced reports from the museums, collective reflections on the project and analytic outputs from the many structured online conversations held over 4 years exploring museological practices in the Global South. Also see Resources.

Arna Jharna: The Thar Desert Museum was established in 2000 and was envisioned by Komal Kothari, a renowned folklorist and ethnomusicologist, to exhibit and bring about public engagement with the folk culture and oral traditions he had spent his life documenting in Rajasthan, India. Kothari waited until he found the perfect spot, Arna Jharna (‘forest and spring’), in the village of Moklawas, about 15 kilometres from Jodhpur city. The Arna Jharna Thar Desert Museum, perching upon the edge of the Aravali Mountain range as it descends to the plain of the Thar desert, highlights the beauty of the geographical diversity of Rajasthan. The 10 acres of the museum site is surrounded by protected forest areas, sacred spots and waterbodies, and is a haven for desert flora and fauna. In keeping with Kothari’s vision for a ‘living museum’, apart from the collection, all aspects of biodiversity, geology and water-harvesting associated with the museum site are part of an interactive learning process—the outside and inside of the museum are interrelated. Marked by a devotion to the natural and organic resources of Rajasthan, the museum pays tribute to the local communities and their local foundations of knowledge, art and culture, which is not a thing of the past, but a resource for rebuilding the present.

The study group of the Arna Jharna museum worked towards an exhibition about regionally specific pottery. The impetus for this project came out of community consultations and research by the study group. The study group consists of the head of the museum and numerous young researchers as well as local villagers. Study group member Kritika Rathore shared the following compelling insights that emerged from the fieldwork: “Arna Jharna Museum delves into the traditional lifestyles of rural Rajasthani communities and their deep connection with the natural environment. Collaborating with various occupational groups, including musicians, puppeteers, broom makers, and potters, we aim to understand their art and adaptability in response to changing circumstances”.

	The Conflictorium, Museum of Conflict

In an increasingly polarized world, existing in binaries, where conscious division on the basis of identity has become the norm, the Conflictorium stands for the in-between, beyond the black and white, where the shades of grey are acknowledged and celebrated for the cause of peace. In doing so, we at the Conflictorium envision ourselves as a medium that helps build bridges creatively; highlighting how social change is possible through innovation.

Through this, we aim to:Contemporize the discourse on conflict by promoting acceptance of conflict as necessary to human refinement and promoting dialogue on contentious issues.Be a resource centre on ‘peace and conflict’ using art, law, culture and the behavioral sciences in an integrated way.Add existing knowledge on conflict and build new paradigms, while giving space to expression of innate feelings.Collaborate with all actors to reduce violent tension and to find creative community-led solutions to conflict.Build a case for informed policy which allows for community expression through artistic and cultural practice.Support vulnerable groups to set up a ‘Conflictorium’ in their own spaces, so that violence is reduced and differences are celebrated.Build an interdisciplinary team of young, creative and diverse professionals who want to make a difference to themselves and to others.Start making a difference from where we are located. The centre-periphery tensions need to be nurtured.Create a Co-laboratory where people and institutions who want to invest in peace and creative tension are welcome.

Through the course of the year the study group (working in both the Ahmedabad and Raipur chapters of the Conflictorium) undertook a series of intra-team workshops to address needs for organisational consciousness building along with skill and capacity development. In addition, (in the interest of building a basis of shared creative and cultural experiences across two cities), the team made a collective trip to the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2023 - an international exhibition of contemporary art held in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India and also the International Theater Festival of Kerala. As an independent museum, the Conflictorium has to consistently navigate the complexities of attracting, sustaining and creating funds that support the museum’s work. This involves various levels of communication with stakeholders, audiences and supporters. In the last half of the year, the team dedicated its energies to collective research on the infrastructures of fundraising, and workshopping strategies for sustainability into the future.

The Acervo da Laje is a space of aesthetic and artistic memory in the peripheries of Salvador, Bahia. It occupies two houses in the neighbourhood of São João do Cabrito, Plataforma, an area long seen as dangerous due to poverty and violence. The story of the Acervo da Laje (“Rooftop” Collection) began in 2011, when educator José Eduardo Ferreira Santos, together with photographer Marco Illuminati, began mapping artists from the area known as Subúrbio Ferroviário for his postdoctoral research.
Born in this suburb of Salvador, which is distributed into 15 districts that suffer from high rates of violence and disregard by public authorities, the researcher was impressed with the art he saw being made there and decided to bring the works together in a single space. The Acervo da Laje is currently divided between two neighboring houses in the Plataforma district. In addition to books, recordings, newspapers and objects that help tell the community’s story, work by local artists, as well as those from other districts on the city’s periphery, such as Zaca Oliveira, Ray Bahia, Prentice, Perinho Santana, Almiro Borges, Isa Amaral and Indiano Carioca, is also on permanent display.

The Acervo study group planned, within the scope of the project, to point out new conceptions of the notion of museum, capable of addressing racial and territorial relations in a situated and complex way, having as a starting point an insurgent institution, which is the Acervo da Laje. Throughout this year, the group has been meeting and working on various projects together. One of the main objectives of this intergenerational group is to strengthen the museum's internal capacities: how curatorship, museum leadership and exhibition development are stimulated by the involvement of young people from the neighboring district of São João do Cabrito, in Salvador's Subúrbio Ferroviário. The study group has been actively working on creating an inventory of the collections held by the Acervo da Laje and has been involved with the numerous exhibitions throughout Brazil to which the Acervo's collection has traveled.

Mutare Museum is a regional museum under the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe. It started as a general museum and subsequently developed into one which specializes in the collection of transport and antiquities. Mutare Museum boasts of being the Nation’s leader in Transport and Antiquities collection. Mutare Museum was initially established by local enthusiasts as the Umtali Museum Society in 1954, before becoming a National Museum in 1959. Its most spectacular collection of vintage cars, motorbikes and wagons, coaches and steam engines was donated to the Museum by local enthusiastic collectors and the first Honorary Curator, Captain E. F. Boultbee.

The Mutare Museum study group embarked on a collective research journey taking the group into Mhakwe Community in Chimanimani District of Eastern Zimbabwe. The intention of the project was to document traditional dances and music that resulted in a digital exhibition in the museum. The project involved all study group members at Mutare Museum, community members and stakeholders (for example members of the Mhakwe community such as the traditional leaders: Chiefs and Kraal Heads, singers, dancers and other participants). The project experimented with a collective structure of research and documentation, in which designated tasks were democratised across designated professional roles.

The Majimaji Memorial Museum is a branch of the National Museum of Tanzania. The Majimaji Museum was officially opened to the public as a National Museum in 2010. This is the only Museum in Tanzania presenting the great history of Maji Maji resistance in the liberation movements during the German colonial era. The Maji Maji exhibition includes the execution site where 67 Maji Maji heroes where hanged publicly on 27th February 1906, the mass grave of 66 Maji Maji heroes, the grave for the great Ngoni warrior Nduna (The Principal Sub Chief) Songea Luwafu Mbano from whom Songea town derives its name. The municipality of Songea and Ruvuma region in general has a unique history to reckon with, centred on the 1905 – 1907 Maji Maji war. The war got its name from “magic water” given by a medicine man of Rufiji basin, Kinjekitile Ngwale.People directly killed in the region and Municipality of Songea were Ngoni and Matengo Chiefs sub-Chiefs and their henchmen who were captured during the battle. They were convicted and finally hanged publicly on 27th February 1906 in Songea town.

This unique history depicts the commitment and eagerness of Tanzanians toward emancipation from colonialism, and reclaiming their lost freedom from the German administration. The war ended in 1907, leaving some historical monuments, features, and structures as testimony to what actually happened. These include German boma, Gereza (prisons), the Commonwealth cemetery, hanging place of Ngoni warriors, the Maji Maji warrior’s hanging place, the mass grave, at the place where now the Maji Maji Memorial Museum stands. Since 1980 the elder’s council under the Ngoni Chief as the chairperson of the council has used the Museum ground to commemorate the event every year on 27th February. This commemoration is currently going on with the collaboration between the National Museum, the ministry of Natural resources and Tourism as well as the Regional administration.

At the Maji Maji Museum, the study group worked towards developing methods of engaging a wider pool of community participants in the everyday running of the museum. As Danford Majogo, study group member and museum curator explained, the group has recently undertaken a project of maintenance and repair as a form of collective care: “we maintain the traditional houses (huts) used by Ngoni chiefs especial Inkosi the one who led the group During the Majimaji war in Songea. The community members learn how to maintain it and keep the history alive. Also in other ways community members participate in conservation activities through preventive measures and remedial conservation and all these procedures aims to make the local community to be a part of the museum and preserving museum objects”.

Mafalala is a popular Mozambican neighbourhood that is located in the outskirts of Maputo city. It is famous due to important events that occurred there and a number of Mozambican political personalities lived or were born in the location, in addition, the neighbourhood assisted the emergence of cultural and political consciousness amongst African people living there. The Mafalala Museum presents Mafalala, as the foundation of its curatorial discourse and looks at the city of Maputo through the periphery. Mafalala Museum is the result of an organic and participatory community process led by the Association IVERCA | Tourism, Culture and Environment (www.iverca.org).
The museum is motivated by the desire to stimulate critical thinking through art and the creation of cultural facilities. Mafalala Museum is a community-based museum that follows the foundations of social museology. Social museology in Mozambique is a very recent concept that society didn’t embrace in its totality. Talking about social museology is to talk about self-knowledge, development and transformation of local communities. Through this new trend, communities were able to create new and own paths reinventing the museum. This reinvention was committed to the construction of a new social practice that privileged individual memories, affirmed community’s values and promoted social transformation. Iverca embraced this theory and built the museum.

Throughout the year, the intergenerational study group has been working on a documentary about Marrabenta. Marrabenta is an urban music genre, very popular in Mozambique and therefore deserving of a documentary that will allow a tracing of its historical trajectory, as well as documenting and preserving it. It does so with strong impetus against the Nationalist appropriation of popular culture and with an aim to engage an intergenerational cohort of voices. The project aimed to better strengthen the connection with the community and through this activity take advantage to create and improve the audiovisual archive and the digitization process of the Mafalala museum.

After 9 months of virtual exchanges, the 6 museums that we worked with in 2023 made in person trips to visit each-other’s institutions, towns, and homes. Each museum selected one representative to travel across the world to experience a few days of life with their partner museum community. The first travel exchange took place between the Conflictorium, Museum of Conflict in Ahmedabad and the Mutare Museum in Mutare, Zimbabwe. From Mutare, museum curator Chiedza Zhahare made the trip and from the Conflictorium visual content designer Vaidehi Sadiwala travelled across the Indian ocean.

The Conflictorium’s visual designer Vaidehi Sadiwala shared some moments from her travels through Zimbabwe: “indigenous artists display their works at the tourist centric places, on the ground (mostly sculptures ), from far view it seems like a graveyard but it had some of the best sculptures I've ever seen”. Having the chance to visit museums, cultural spaces and galleries in Harare too, Vaidehi shared “exposure to the contemporary art scene of Zimbabwe was one of best experiences I had there.

About the Mutare museum, Vaidehi reflected that it was “a kind museum I've been visiting since my childhood. Fancy antique stuff and historical records. It really brought out the inner child in me and I could feel the curiosity and fascinated by their collection of wild species from leopard to butterflies. And an amazing transportation collection too. I don't know why but the colour I sense in the Conflictorium was the same in the Mutare museum, brown tone and a bit dark. Kind of gives an old and rustic sense to the museum”.

For Chiedza, “Conflictorium Museum is a unique museum with different exhibits from Mutare Museum. I found the museum theme closer to reality as it seeks to address conflict issues. I had an appreciation of their interactive displays. I was attracted to the Conflictorium space because of the exhibits, the one which read 'NO MORE SHALL I WEAVE A GARMENT OF PAIN' and the 'SORRY TREE' have found a place in my heart. In regards to conflict narratives and exhibits around that we hope for future collaborations with Conflictorium to develop a museum that focuses on liberation war heritage”.

The second travel exchange took place between Maji Maji Memorial Museum (Songea, Tanzania) and Arna Jharna Desert Museum (Rajasthan, India). Curator and director of the Maji Maji Balthazar Nyamusya and director of Arna Jharna Kuldeep Kothari travelled rather vast distances together - getting to know each-others museum worlds and study groups. Travel between rural destinations in Africa and India is a little more complex than flying between capital cities, and requires alot from the local teams to make everything happen!

Speaking from a potter's home in rural Rajasthan, India, Kuldeep Kothari narrated: “after Balthazar’s arrival yesterday evening we went to a potters family in a village called Banad near Jodhpur, to meet one Hindu potter family (Bhairon Lal) and one muslim potter family (Rajak). These families have been doing pottery work for generations making all kinds of utility pottery. Right from storage to cooking food in it”. As the visit to Rajasthan came to a close, Balthazar reflected: “When I was in India I witnessed a lot of documented folklore and most intangible heritage: more than 10,000 pieces in Kuldeep's archive… In fact he and his colleagues have done a lot! It is high time through the global south museology to support such initiatives. All in all - preservation of culture is not a solo activity”.

Once the duo reached Songea in Tanzania, Kuldeep shared with us some of his experiences: “we have been meeting with communities/ tribes and museum staff. Young people from the museum who are very enthusiastic. We also discussed how to preserve cultural material, oral traditions, and intangible cultural heritage of the regional tribes. Their surroundings are very interesting for documentation”.

Of concern to the Maji Maji museum is the relationship between the physical space of the museum and the active cultural, political and social life of the region of Songea. Far from hosting and preserving fading practices or unused objects, the Maji Maji museum (through its staff and engaged community) plays an active role in important moments like coronation ceremonies. When Kuldeep Kothari visited the Majimaji museum, such a celebration was incidentally taking place. Balthazar and Kuldeep witnessed a coronation ceremony in which “ten chief’s of Ngoni tribes who were newly elected took part. During the ceremony, one Supreme Chief and the ten other Chiefs and hundreds of villagers gathered to mark the occasion in Songea districts in the Ruvuma region of Tanzania”

Finally, Ivan Laranjeira - director of Museu Mafalala in Maputo and Jose Eduardo Ferreira Santos - co-founder of Acervo da Laje, Salvador crossed the Atlantic to exchange experiences, ideas and plans for the future!

On spending time in Mozambique Jose Eduardo describes “(i)t was a very rich conversation that helped to share good practices between the institutions and, above all, to think about the collective memory of the suburbs and peripheries as marginalized and neglected spaces. However, they are impregnated with talent, memory and socio-cultural, political and economic dynamics that define who we are. On the other hand, the thinking and philosophy of Mafalala Museu and Acervo da Laje lies in the importance of creating and promoting alternative narratives through audiovisual (sound, photography and video) and the documentation and creation of archives as factors of emancipation and empowerment. The importance of this dialog between museums from the global south is reflected in an approach that questions the aesthetics and classic patterns of colonial curatorial processes. Redefining paradigms and shaping futures”.

With this last visit, the importance of such South-South collaborations was really underscored. Aside from also appearing on Mozambiquan National TV, Jose and Ivan made waves in the cultural scenes of Maputo and Salvador.
